Downtown Valparaiso Fall and Holiday Events 2026: Your Guide

From the second Saturday in October to the first Saturday in December, nearly every downtown Valparaiso event asks for one small thing. You check in at a tent, carry a punch card from shop to shop, stop at a business door with a bag, or show a restaurant receipt at the ice rink. Each event leads into the storefronts around the courthouse, and the one event that charges admission helps pay for the ones that don't.

That shapes how the season plays out, too. The weekends worth planning cluster around Central Park Plaza and the courthouse lawn. A second set of evenings happens up the hill at Valparaiso University. And this fall, some roadwork on the west side of downtown is worth knowing about before you park.

The one ticket that pays for the free ones

Valparaiso Events is a nonprofit. It produces the Summer Outdoor Movies, the Summer Concert Series, the Popcorn Festival, Downtown Trick-or-Treat, the Fall Harvest Festival and Holly Days, and most of its events are free. The Autumn Promenade on Saturday, October 17, runs differently. It's ticketed, and the organizers say plainly what the ticket money supports:

"Please know that by purchasing a ticket, you are not only getting a day of chocolate bliss, you are also helping us create a vibrant, thriving community!"

The Promenade works like the Chocolate Walk, with fall flavors instead: caramel apple, cinnamon, maple and pumpkin spice. It runs noon to 4:30 p.m. Check-in opens at 11 a.m. at the Valparaiso Events tent on the courthouse lawn at 16 E. Lincolnway. There you pick up a map, a bag and a lanyard that doubles as your punch card for treats at each official stop.

A few rules save you trouble at the tent. Every attendee needs a ticket, whatever their age. Tickets are non-refundable unless the whole event is canceled. One transaction covers up to six tickets, and they can all be in one name. There's no set route, and the organizers expect you to walk 1 to 2 miles, so wear good shoes.

Street and lot parking downtown is free. The covered option is the Porter County Administration Building garage at Indiana Avenue and Lafayette Street.

October, in the order it happens

The Promenade sits in the middle of a month where every downtown event takes the same approach.

  1. Saturday, October 10, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Fall Harvest Festival brings pumpkin painting, cider and family activities to Central Park Plaza at 68 Lafayette St. Also starting at 10 a.m. that morning, the city has scheduled a tree planting in the Jessee-Pifer Park area, where it plans to put in roughly 28 to 32 trees across the neighborhood, public spaces included.
  2. Saturday, October 17, noon to 4:30 p.m. The Autumn Promenade, with the punch-card lanyard and courthouse-lawn check-in described above.
  3. Friday, October 23, 4 to 6 p.m. Downtown Trick-or-Treat, with more than 100 local businesses and organizations taking part.
  4. Tuesday, October 27, 6:30 p.m. The Valparaiso University Symphony Orchestra's Halloween Spooktacular at the Chapel of the Resurrection, 1600 Chapel Drive.

The first item is a nice pairing if you live near Jessee-Pifer. You can help plant in the morning and still reach the plaza before the Harvest Festival wraps up at 2 p.m. Jessee-Pifer has a longer story with the city, too. Its sewer separation projects were finished in 2012 and 2013, part of the same two-decade effort behind the roadwork you'll see on Lincolnway this fall.

November turns the receipt into the ticket

As the weather cools, the punch card gives way to receipts and shopping hours. Pink Friday comes first, on Friday, November 20, with hours set by each participating business.

The busiest night of the month is Saturday, November 28, which is Small Business Saturday. Valpo Parks holds its free Winter Fest & Tree Lighting at Central Park Plaza from 5 to 7 p.m., with music, free photos with Santa, the Good Neighbor Award presentation and the lighting of the big Christmas tree. Bring a receipt from a downtown restaurant and the ice rink gives you discounted admission, which the department ties directly to Small Business Saturday. So the order is easy: eat downtown first, then skate on the discount. Valpo Parks hasn't announced the rink's 2026 opening day yet, but the Winter Fest listing confirms it will be open that night.

The next afternoon, Sunday, November 29, the Vienna Boys Choir gives a holiday performance at 4 p.m. in the Valparaiso High School Auditorium. Doors open at 3:30 p.m.

December, and the second stage on the hill

Downtown's holiday season ends on the same weekend as Valparaiso University's biggest concert, so the first week of December fills up fast.

Date Time Event Location
Thursday, Dec. 3 7 p.m. Classical Blast: Dark Side of the Yule Chicago Street Theatre, 154 W. Chicago St.
Friday, Dec. 4 7:30 p.m. Christmas at Valpo Chapel of the Resurrection
Saturday, Dec. 5 3 to 6 p.m. Holly Days Downtown Valparaiso
Saturday, Dec. 5 7:30 p.m. Christmas at Valpo Chapel of the Resurrection

Holly Days is the season's last downtown event, with ice sculptures, holiday lights, carolers, Santa and a holiday train. It wraps up at 6 p.m., ninety minutes before the Saturday Christmas at Valpo performance starts at the Chapel of the Resurrection. That's enough time to see both. If you're doing the concert dinner, the university serves it at 5:30 p.m. in the Harre Union Ballrooms, which overlaps the last half hour of Holly Days.

The chapel shows up twice on this calendar, for the Spooktacular in October and Christmas at Valpo in December. Those two nights mark the start and end of the university's part of the season, and both are listed on the same Valparaiso Events calendar as the downtown festivals.

A warm room between events

The newest downtown option for cold-weather evenings opened this summer. Alpen Haus & The Golf Lodge held its grand opening in July and a ribbon-cutting on Tuesday, August 4. Located at 13 Washington St., it pairs a Southern German restaurant and bierhalle with four Trackman sports simulators.

This is its first fall and winter downtown. In a season where the rink rewards a downtown restaurant receipt and every festival leads into storefronts, Alpen Haus is a new place to warm up between events, or to golf when the courses close.

The work on Lincolnway this fall

If you drive into downtown from the west, plan for construction. The City of Valparaiso broke ground on the Weston Street Stormwater Project on September 30. Work along Lincolnway is planned for this fall. Construction moves to Weston Street next spring and is expected to reach north to the intersection of Chicago and Weston.

The project totals $2,371,858. It includes about 1,200 feet of new storm sewer plus water main replacement, and $958,752 of the cost comes from federal State and Tribal Assistance Grants through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. At the ceremony, City Administrator Steve Poulos noted that storms in August had forced the groundbreaking to be rescheduled, and he pointed to them as an example of why the system matters. DLZ designed the project, and Grimmer Construction is building it.

One project people sometimes hope will be done this season won't be. The city approved a plan for a 1,400-foot multi-use trail connecting downtown to the Transit Oriented District. July 2026 Board of Public Works minutes put tree clearing in January and February and construction in April and May, which means the trail is a 2027 project. For this year's Promenade and Holly Days, getting downtown on foot still means the streets you already use.

These events depend on downtown businesses taking part, whether they're handing out Promenade treats, filling Trick-or-Treat bags or writing the restaurant receipts that get you onto the rink. That's the part of Valparaiso the Larita Thomas team follows from week to week.
