Merrillville often gets described from the outside as a highway town, a place people pass through on the way to Southlake Mall or the Indiana Dunes. That version misses what actually happens between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when the stretch of Broadway between the Dean and Barbara White Community Center and the mall corridor becomes the quiet engine of local social life.
The point of this post is simple. If you already live here, you do not need another list of attractions. You need a rhythm. And the 2026 calendar has organized itself into one.
The Broadway spine holds the season together
Most towns spread summer programming across a dozen parks. Merrillville has consolidated its heaviest lifting into a single mile of Broadway anchored by the Dean and Barbara White Community Center at 6600 Broadway. That address hosts the Sunset Markets, the parade route runs through it, and nearly every restaurant worth building an evening around is a short drive north or south along the same corridor.
This matters because it changes how you plan. A summer Thursday no longer requires a decision tree. Dinner, music, kids, drinks, walking distance to your car — the answer lives on one street.
Thursday nights belong to the Sunset Market
The centerpiece of the season is the free Sunset Market series that Merrillville Parks and Recreation runs at the community center. The town is running these markets from 4 to 9 p.m. on select Thursdays at the Dean and Barbara White Community Center, 6600 Broadway, with music, local eats and a community atmosphere as the sun sets. Beyond the stage, the market draws more than 25 local vendors and food trucks, a Kid Zone, and a beer garden open to guests 21 and older with valid ID. A live salsa lesson from an actual dance studio at a suburban parks event is not a normal Thursday in Northwest Indiana, and it tends to pull a bigger crowd than the earlier dates.
Two tactical notes for regulars. Arrive closer to 5 than to 7 if you want a real look at the vendor booths before the music crowd fills in. And bring your own lawn chair. The community center lawn does not have permanent seating and the folding chairs go fast.
What to eat before you walk over
The dining question is where Merrillville actually differentiates itself from the surrounding NWI towns, because the density of sit-down options along Broadway and around Southlake Mall is unusual for a community this size.
For a proper dinner before a Sunset Market, Gino's Steakhouse is the obvious anchor. The restaurant offers a covered outdoor patio for warm summer days that is also equipped with a fireplace for cooler evenings, alongside its lounge and dining room. That covered patio matters in July, when a 6 p.m. reservation can still catch direct sun. For something lighter and closer to the mall, Cooper's Hawk at 2120 Southlake Mall runs $8 international wines by the glass and small bites starting at $10, which is a workable pre-market stop if you are eating at the market itself.
The rest of the corridor rewards a little exploration. Asparagus Restaurant leans into a Zen-styled dining room with seafood pad Thai, wasabi herb-crusted lamb rack, and peppercorn grilled ribeye. Veterans' Cafe and Grill supports local veterans through the meal itself, Merrillville Florist and Tea Room does exactly what its name promises, and Region Cat Cafe serves coffee alongside cats that are up for adoption. Those three are not competing with each other. They are the reason a resident's weekly rotation in Merrillville can look nothing like a neighbor's.
There is also a new arrival worth watching. The Social is opening its first location at 399 E 81st Avenue in Century Plaza, from an ownership group that already operates several restaurants across Northwest Indiana. Breakfast-forward concepts along that stretch of 81st have been thin, and a well-run one will change how the corridor eats on Saturday mornings.
The weekend anchors you actually plan around
Some Merrillville weekends this summer are not optional. They are the ones you tell out-of-town family about a month in advance.
The Fourth is the first. The Town of Merrillville 4th of July Parade steps off Saturday, July 4, 2026 at 11 a.m. and runs along Broadway from 78th to 66th. Park south of 78th and walk north if you want a clear exit; the community-center end of the route locks up first.
Late July belongs to the Serbian community. SerbFest at St. Sava runs July 31 through August 2, and the church grounds transform into one of the more distinctive food festivals in the region. If you have never had proper ćevapi or a plate of sarma at the source, this is your weekend.
The Lake County Fair follows immediately. The fair runs August 7 through 16, 2026 and features carnival rides, food, an All-Star Monster Truck Show, a petting zoo, rodeo, horse and pony shows, contests and demonstrations. Ten days is a long window; the middle weekend tends to be less brutal on parking than the opening or closing nights.
August closes with two very different flavors of gathering. The NWI Corvette Club Annual Car Show sets up at the Holiday Inn Express in Merrillville on August 1, featuring Corvettes and all makes of vehicles with a meet-and-greet and food. Three weeks later, SS Constantine and Helen Greek Fest returns August 21–23 at 8000 Madison Street, which for many longtime residents is the actual bookend of summer.
A workable Merrillville summer week: dinner at Gino's Thursday, then walk the Sunset Market until the beer garden closes. Movie in the park midweek with the kids. Save the weekend for whichever festival is up on the rotation.
Movie Nights in the Park deserve a spot on the calendar
Merrillville Parks quietly programs one of the better free family series in the county alongside the Thursday markets. Movie Nights in the Park include "Zootopia 2" on July 8 and "Small Foot" on July 22. These are not throwaway titles. A first-run animated feature on a public lawn, at no cost, is a serious value proposition for households with school-age kids in July.
Two things to know if you go. The screen goes up at the community center, which means you can pair a movie night with the same Broadway dinner rotation you would use for a Sunset Market. And the lawn tilts slightly, so choose your blanket spot with that in mind if you want a straight sightline.
One more thing on the calendar
Not every summer event is a party. The Town of Merrillville is running its annual Job Fair on Wednesday, July 30, 2026 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Dean and Barbara White Community Center at 6600 Broadway. If you or someone in your household is between roles, this is worth putting on the same calendar as the concerts. Same address, different reason to show up.
Building the summer into a habit
The move here is not to attend everything. It is to pick a night of the week that is yours.
